51 Bluetooth Statistics on Shipments, Adoption and Emerging Uses

Bluetooth has become a global device platform spanning phones, computers, audio products, wearables, trackers, smart-home equipment and commercial systems. The figures below describe global industry shipments and forecasts, not unique users or installed devices, and they distinguish measured periods from projections.

Bluetooth Shipment Statistics and Platform Adoption

Bluetooth’s scale is best understood through annual device shipments. ABI Research forecasts cited in the 2024 Bluetooth® Market Update cover global industry shipments and are not counts of people, subscriptions or installed devices.

Measure Period Global figure Type
Bluetooth-enabled devices 2028 7.5 billion Forecast
Bluetooth peripheral shipments 2024 3.5 billion Forecast
Bluetooth peripheral shipments 2028 5.5 billion Forecast
Bluetooth device-shipment growth 2024–2028 8% CAGR Forecast
Bluetooth peripheral growth 2024–2028 12% CAGR Forecast

The same 2024 update estimates that 100% of key new smartphones, tablets and laptops globally support both Bluetooth Classic and Bluetooth LE. It separately reports that 100% of new smartphones include Bluetooth technology in 2024; both figures describe market penetration among new devices, not unique-user adoption.

A later official Bluetooth® Device forecast projects more than 5.3 billion Bluetooth device shipments globally in 2025 and nearly 8 billion in 2029. In that 2025 forecast baseline, phones, tablets, PCs and laptops account for about 60% of Bluetooth dual-mode shipments, while dual-mode shipments are projected to grow at a 2% CAGR over the stated five-year horizon.

Bluetooth Low Energy is becoming the dominant capability in the forecast mix, even though dual-mode products remain important for compatibility and audio. The 2024 market update forecasts 1.8 billion single-mode Bluetooth LE devices globally in 2024, with single-mode LE shipments expected to more than double over the five years after 2024.

The 2025 Device forecast gives the directional transition more detail:

  • Single-mode Bluetooth LE shipments are projected to grow at a 22% CAGR over the forecast horizon.
  • Single-mode Bluetooth Classic shipments are projected to decline at a 14% CAGR over the same horizon.
  • Single-mode Bluetooth LE volumes are expected to catch up to approximately 1:1 with dual-mode volumes by 2028.

The 2024 update forecasts that 97% of Bluetooth devices will include Bluetooth LE by 2028 when single-mode LE and dual-mode Classic-plus-LE devices are combined. It also identifies more than 50 active Bluetooth specification projects in the 2024 update, showing continuing development activity rather than a completed transition.

One planned capability targets Bluetooth LE data rates up to 8 Mbps. That is a specification-development target, not an observed average throughput or a guarantee for every Bluetooth LE product.

Bluetooth Audio Streaming and LE Audio Data

Audio remains one of Bluetooth’s largest shipment categories. The 2024 market update forecasts Bluetooth audio-streaming device shipments to grow 1.38 times from 2024 to 2028, with earbuds and speakers providing the clearest product-level measures.

Product category Period Global shipment forecast
Bluetooth earbuds 2024 448 million
Bluetooth earbuds 2028 712 million
Bluetooth speakers 2024 262 million
Peripheral-audio devices 2027 Nearly 1.5 billion
TWS earbuds 2027 More than 730 million

In 2024, Bluetooth earbuds are forecast to represent 59% of wireless headsets shipped globally. The denominator is all Bluetooth wireless headsets in the cited ABI Research forecast, so this percentage should not be read as the share of people using earbuds.

The official Bluetooth® Audio Market Forecasts also gives a 2027 view of the peripheral-audio market. More than 730 million true wireless stereo earbuds, 208 million voice-control front ends, 192 million speakers and 179 million hearables are forecast to ship globally that year; the peripheral-audio total excludes platform and transmitter devices.

Bluetooth Wearables, Controllers and PC Accessories

Bluetooth extends well beyond audio into personal electronics and connected controls. The 2024 market update forecasts the following global 2024 shipments:

  • 177 million Bluetooth smartwatches.
  • 35 million Bluetooth sports, fitness and wellness trackers.
  • 334 million Bluetooth OEM remote controls.
  • 85 million Bluetooth game controllers.
  • 325 million Bluetooth-connected PC accessories.

Wearables are expected to ship 648 million units globally in 2028. Smartwatch shipments alone are forecast at 234 million that year, representing a 1.5-times increase in annual shipments from 2024 to 2028; these are shipment multiples, not growth in unique owners.

For readers focused on computer accessories, the 2024 estimate of 325 million Bluetooth PC accessories is a category shipment figure. It does not specify a split among keyboards, mice, headsets or other accessory types, so the number should not be used to infer demand for any single product.

Bluetooth Location, Tracking and Access Statistics

Bluetooth location services combine industrial tracking, personal item finding and access-related products. The 2024 market update forecasts location-services device shipments to grow 2.68 times from 2024 to 2028 globally.

Location or tracking measure Period Global figure
Bluetooth real-time-location-system implementations End of 2024 178,000
Bluetooth asset-tracking devices shipped 2024 107 million
Personal Bluetooth item-finding solutions shipped 2024 115 million
Bluetooth key fobs and accessories shipped 2024 29 million
Bluetooth asset-tracking devices shipped 2028 322 million

The forecast for personal Bluetooth item-finding solution shipments is four times the 2024 level by 2028, although the source does not provide a 2028 endpoint. Similarly, the 178,000 real-time-location-system figure is a forecast for implementations by the end of 2024, not a count of individual tags or devices.

These measures use different denominators: implementations describe deployed systems, while the other figures describe annual shipments of devices or solutions. They therefore indicate several forms of commercial and consumer activity without establishing the number of people, sites or assets served.

Bluetooth device networks cover connected homes, appliances, lighting and retail infrastructure. The 2024 market update forecasts Bluetooth device-network shipments to grow 2.44 times from 2024 to 2028 globally.

The 2024 global shipment forecasts include 675 million Bluetooth smart-home devices and 203 million Bluetooth smart appliances. Networked-lighting-control devices are forecast to grow at a 115% CAGR over the five years after the 2024 update; the unusually high rate is reported by ABI Research and is not converted here into an unsupported endpoint.

Electronic shelf labels provide a separate commercial example. The Bluetooth® Electronic Shelf Label Market Research Note forecasts 100 million Bluetooth electronic-shelf-label devices shipping annually by 2028.

Bluetooth ESL measure Period Annual shipment forecast
Bluetooth electronic shelf labels 2021 Approximately 16 million
Bluetooth electronic shelf labels 2028 117 million
Bluetooth electronic shelf labels 2028 100 million annually in the 2024 market update

The ESL source also lists 8 million Bluetooth ESL units in 2021 and 15 million in 2022 in an earlier forecast series. These are forecasts from the cited ABI Research materials, and Bluetooth ESL figures refer to the Bluetooth subset rather than all electronic shelf-label technologies; the differing 2028 figures come from separate supplied forecast statements and should not be merged into one series.

Across all sections, the central limitation is consistent: the Bluetooth SIG market-update figures are global industry shipments or forecasts supported by ABI Research. They do not provide a user-level adoption rate, consumer price, causal outcome or installed-base total.
